2.5 year-old Standard Schnauzer

Hello. We are looking for a very special home for our 2.5 year-old castrated Standard Schnauzer. He is a really good dog in so many ways: he is loving with us, intelligent, enjoys agility in the garden and is great at close heelwork, doing tricks etc. (see the videos of him doing agility in the garden and working on obedience moves in the hall). He’s also a good watchdog as he sounds the alarm when anyone approaches the house – though that can be annoying. At this stage, I expect you are asking what the problem is. Unfortunately, he does not get on with our 7-year-old cockapoo bitch and given the size difference we cannot risk any confrontation meaning that we live day to day with them in separate areas of the house, sharing our time with each of them. We are now at the stage of thinking that this isn’t sustainable. If that were the only issue, I’m sure re-homing him would be easy, but it isn’t just our other dog that he doesn’t get on with. He is also unpredictable with both strange dogs and people. He has never bitten anybody, but we take no risks and muzzle him when he is in public. When we have visitors, we put him in his crate only letting him out when he is quiet and settled – but it can still be very off-putting as he will not let strangers stroke him. We’ve soldiered on with him because we love and care about him, but we have to admit that he really isn't the right dog for our family. I think he would really suit someone who has time for him, has no other dog, and wants a constant companion to be with them most of the time. He is crate trained, muzzle trained (though he doesn’t like it), fully vaccinated and flea treated. He’s a complicated dog and not friendly to everyone. It'll take him some time to accept you and no doubt he'll be a nightmare until he settles but he is such a special dog that if you have the time, understanding and patience, he will be a friend for life.
