When buying second-hand, carefully inspect the item before committing to purchase. Check for any damage, wear and tear, or missing parts. Ask the seller about the item's history and usage. If possible, test the item to ensure it functions correctly. Always meet in a safe, public place and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
When buying from a private seller, your rights are more limited than when buying from a business. The principle of 'buyer beware' applies. The seller must accurately describe the item, but you are responsible for inspecting it and ensuring it meets your needs. You may have recourse if the item is significantly misrepresented.
Prioritise safety by meeting in a well-lit, public place. Inform a friend or family member about the meeting and your location. Avoid sharing personal information beyond what is necessary for the transaction. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, and never feel pressured to make a purchase.
If you suspect a listing is fraudulent or a seller is behaving suspiciously, report it to Gumtree immediately. Provide as much detail as possible, including screenshots and any communication you've had with the seller. You can also report suspected scams to Action Fraud, the UK's national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime.
When buying electrical goods, ensure they have a valid UK safety mark (e.g., CE marking). Ask the seller if the item has been PAT tested (Portable Appliance Testing). If possible, test the item before purchasing. Be particularly cautious with older electrical items, as they may not meet current safety standards.
