Civil Engineer - Highway & Drainage Design (Leeds)

What You'll Be Doing - The Civil Engineer Role

As an Infrastructure Engineer specialising in civil engineering, highway and drainage design, you will:

Lead or contribute to the design of highways and drainage infrastructure projects from concept through to completion.

Prepare detailed design drawings, calculations, and specifications for drainage networks, highway geometry, earthworks, and associated civil infrastructure.

Liaise with clients, local authorities, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure designs meet regulatory, environmental, and quality requirements.

Carry out site supervision or site visits where required to support construction phases, monitor compliance, and resolve on-site technical issues.

Review and coordinate technical submissions, risk assessments, and design reports.

Support junior engineers and CAD/technicians, providing mentorship and technical guidance when needed.

Essential Skills & Experience

You should have:

A degree or HND in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).

Proven experience in highway and drainage design - ideally within UK frameworks, with understanding of standards such as Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) or appropriate local standards.

Strong design and calculation skills - drainage network design, earthworks, highway geometry, stormwater management, SUDS, etc.

Proficiency in CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroDrainage or similar), plus familiarity with engineering design and modelling tools.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing, client liaison and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Ability to manage your own workload, work under pressure, and meet deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.

Rate / Salary & Benefits

You will receive a competitive salary reflective of your experience - typically in the region of GBP35,000 to GBP42,000 per annum, plus a benefits package including pension contribution, holiday allowance, continuing professional development (CPD) support, and discretionary bonus.
