Description

Part-time poultry caretaker/hen sitter (East Linton, East Lothian)

Looking for:
A reliable, animal‑minded person who would like to earn some extra money and enjoy fresh eggs, helping to care for a well‑established flock of around 50 chickens. This is a calm, routine role suited to someone who enjoys animals, working outdoors, and taking responsibility for daily husbandry.

Hours
Approximately 1-2 hours per day, with flexible timing. Additional care may be required occasionally when we are away (planned in advance).

Main duties
• Daily mucking out and basic coop hygiene;
• Collecting eggs and basic egg handling/labelling/boxing;
• General animal husbandry and welfare checks;
• Monitoring flock behaviour and checking health;
• Refilling waterers and feeders; and,
• Ensuring birds always have access to grit and supplements

Husbandry & health care
• Administering supplements via drinkers when required, including calcium, apple cider vinegar, probiotics, vitamins and minerals;
• Identifying and helping manage broody hens;
• Caring for cockerels as part of the flock; and,
• Flagging any health concerns promptly.

Safety & enclosure checks
• Daily inspection of enclosures and runs;
• Checking for signs of predator interference or break‑ins; and,
• Ensuring gates, fencing, and housing are secure.

Longer-term/occasional tasks (desirable, not essential)
• Checking incubators are functioning correctly;
• Ensuring brooders are on and set correctly when in use; and,
• Supporting basic breeding and chick‑rearing activities over time.

Eggs & local delivery (optional)
• Ideally (but not essential), taking eggs to the café in East Linton every Tuesday for their regular order

What we are looking for
• Reliable, observant, and comfortable working independently;
• Genuine interest in animal welfare;
• Previous experience with chickens or livestock is ideal but not essential – training can be provided;
• Happy to work outdoors in most weather

What we offer
• Paid role (rate to be discussed);
• Fresh, free-range eggs as part of the arrangement;
• A pleasant, low‑stress daily routine; and,
• Clear instructions and support
