Mazda is banking on attractive styling, greater refinement and increased practicality to give the latest version of its family estate added appeal. In its new guise, the load-carrying version of the popular Mazda6 model mixes sporty lines with premium trim, yet also provides more load space. As an added convenience, it comes with a novel tonneau cover that operates automatically The nine-strong range carries a smaller premium than is usually charged over hatchback bodywork and comes with the choice of four trim levels. Under the bonnet is a choice of two-litre and 2.5-litre petrol and two-litre diesel engines.The Mazda6 hatchback was one of the first models to undergo Euro NCAPs more stringent crash tests in 2009. The new overall rating covers not only adult occupant safety but includes child and pedestrian safety along with a rear impact whiplash test. The hatchback scored the maximum five star rating and all models come with traction control plus dual front, side and curtain airbags. Daytime running lights are also standard, which helps you to be seen in murkier weather. On the security front, all cars have a Thatcham category one alarm and immobiliser system, while the top model gets keyless entry and start - allowing you to gain access to the car without taking the key out of your pocket or bag. New from 2009 is an optional blind spot safety system. When the car is travelling at more than 37mph, microwave emitters in the rear bumper detect when vehicles (including motorcycles) are approaching the rear-view blindspot area and a warning light flashes in the windscreen pillar. If the driver indicates to pull out when the vehicle is in range, a warning beep is sounded.Compared with its predecessor, the new model has a longer load floor that measures 1,146mm at its widest point before narrowing to a metre between the wheel wells. Bettered only by the Vauxhall Vectra for sheer capacity, this is a big car and with the 60/40 split rear seat in place, it has bootspace of 519 litres. With the seats folded, a cavernous 1,751 litre volume is available - all of it easily accessible from the side doors and a rear tailgate with one of the widest openings in the class. A welcome addition is the automatic tonneau cover that opens and closes with the tailgate but can be stored under the boot floor when not required.
