Description

This listing is for an 'F Reg' 1988 Classic Austin Mini ‘Designer Mary Quant’ Manual saloon, with V5c, VIN Plate and stamped VIN on scuttle drain channel. The vehicle is offered as shown in the images and described in text.

This is a ‘38 year old, Classic Mini' which has been 'off the road' for some time and is offered here as shown in the images and described in text as an ongoing 'RESTORATION PROJECT' or for spares or repairs.

The Designer Mary Quant was produced in limited numbers following design input by the iconic fashion designer. Some 2000 were manufactured, based on the Mini ‘City’ but with subtle changes which included opening rear side windows, tinted glass etc. The most visually striking change was the model specific black/white striped upholstery with ‘Mary Quant’ logo – quite apt as the only body colours available were in Black or White, 1000 of each rolled off the production line.

The V5c confirms (see image) that this is a Mini limited edition Designer with a 998cc engine and manual transmission.

Registered in my name on the V5c, currently on SORN. The car has its original stamped VIN number clearly visible in the gutter beneath the scuttle and has its VIN plate attached to the OS inner wing. This Classic Mini will become MOT and VED exempt at 40 years. The vehicle will always be relatively rare as part of the Mini heritage, see 'How Many Left' image and will be well worth the time taken to restore to its former condition.

In terms of previous restoration, this was ‘on the road’ as a daily driver up to the point when, in 2015 it failed its MOT and its former Mini enthusiast owner removed it from the road to address the issues cited on the MOT. He removed the majority of fixtures and fittings in preparation for a cosmetic/structural restoration. At that time the car was running and driving so there is every possibility, once re-assembled that the car will drive. All the components, which were carefully removed are present and will be supplied with the car.

However, as can happen, ‘life got in the way’ of the restoration and the car has been left for a number of years, stripped and in dry storage awaiting completion.

With the components removed and with interest in Classic Minis high, now is a great time buy and to address the issues flagged up by the MOT. There will be a need to redress bodywork problems with the sills, rear subframe mounting points and rear subframe. However, the front wings, scuttle and front panel appear to be original to the car and are in decent shape.

The car is offered as a ‘rolling shell’ with subframes and steering fitted. It rolls and steers freely for loading and movement. All of the major components are included, including the engine/gearbox, wiring loom, doors, all glass and an excellent set of original seats.

Further work is now clearly required to make speedy progress on this car but as this has not been started, a ‘new owner’ can undertake the refurbishment to their own desired standard, timescale and budget.

The vehicle is offered with all ITS FAULTS VISIBLE, as a restoration project or for parts - you must decide whether its right for you, please consider this carefully before making any contact or making any commitment to view.

This is NOT a nicely painted or prepared car, experience suggests that whilst 'Minis' previously 'restored' with glossy paintwork may look very nice - they often conceal a multitude of issues - how many times have you read in listings "a bit of bubbling in the paint" in reality, corrosion beneath the glossy paintwork - to rectify, that glossy paintwork will most certainly be compromised!

With a sympathetic 'new owner' this Classic Mini Designer will make a decent everyday or occasional user, it represents (in my opinion) in view of its historical significance and original features - good value and allows plenty of scope to finish to a standard appropriate to available budget and timescale. You decide.

Remember this is a restoration project - do not expect to have it completed in a couple of weekends or to drive or 'tow' it away.

WYSIWYG, Classic Mini used and new parts are plentiful, reasonably priced with 'old school' engineering and at this age, no computers!

Ideal as an 'Winter/Spring' project for a Mini enthusiast or 'Son/Daughter/Dad' restoration.

Prospective buyers should complete their OWN RESEARCH on the COMMON ISSUES to be anticipated in the restoration and use of a Classic Mini of this age.

Please do this BEFORE MAKING ANY CONTACT OR COMMITMENT TO VIEW OR BUY THIS CAR.

I am unable to enter into a dialogue about 'what work needs doing' to this vehicle, beyond that which is already given in the description, as this would be subject to personal experience, opinion and interpretation.

The comments included here give a good flavour of what this Classic Mini is, however, the best option to assess its condition for yourself, IS TO VIEW THE VEHICLE.
