About this client:

Peter (19) is a cheerful and affectionate young man who thrives on sensory experiences – he loves music, light-up toys, and anything tactile. He enjoys companionship and often seeks cuddles or someone to sit beside him while sharing his favourite activities. Peter has a genetic condition resulting in global developmental delay. He is non-verbal and communicates through sounds, gestures, and body language, understanding simple signs and situational cues. Building trust is key to understanding his communication style and supporting his daily routines. Peter is a full-time wheelchair user who can weight-bear and uses a stander as part of his daily exercise routine. He requires full assistance with personal care, including dressing, showering, and toileting. He prefers to use a toilet, though occasional accidents happen. Peter loves his food and, with gentle hand-over-hand guidance, can feed himself. He has epilepsy, with tonic-clonic seizures several times a month, mostly at night. Though on medication, seizures do still occur.

Overview of role:

Peter attends a specialist college in St Albans from Tuesday to Friday, 9.00am to 3.00pm. His Support Worker will assist with his full morning routine – waking him, providing personal care, and preparing breakfast – before accompanying him to college as his escort via patient transport. The shift ends when you return to the family home. If Peter is unwell or recovering from a seizure, he may stay home, and optional extended hours (until 1.00pm) may be available. On Mondays and during school holidays, your focus will shift to engaging Peter in meaningful home and community activities, such as people-watching at the supermarket, using his stander, doing light stretches, or enjoying music and time outdoors. He loves relaxing in his easy chair and participating in simple arts and crafts.

Who this job would suit:

This role would suit an upbeat, caring, and reliable Support Worker who can bring energy and positivity to encourage Peter’s participation in daily life. Peter is gentle and never aggressive, though he can become vocal when tired or unwell, so patience and emotional awareness are important. You’ll need to be physically fit and confident with safe moving and handling without a hoist. Someone warm, engaging, and proactive will thrive in this role.

Why you’ll love this job:

This is a long-standing Snap Care family with an excellent reputation and positive feedback from previous staff. You’ll work in a supportive, collaborative environment where your input is valued. Epilepsy training will be provided, and you’ll make a meaningful difference to a young man’s daily life and wellbeing.
