Pride of our collection of French copper kitchenalia, this is one of several copper cookware items from an antique dealer in Chatillon sur Seine, Burgundy.
It apparently came from a local manoire and was part of a large Batterie de Cuisine for the kitchen.
It’s a high quality lidded Daubiere pan, stock pot, Faitout, marmite, or casserole that’s hand made using traditional cramp seams ( a cramp seam is the join of the sheets of copper where it is sort of dovetailed together).
It also has a hand hammered finish, strong forged iron handles, prominent copper rivets and a worn traditional tin lining.
It’s a big heavy piece at about 4.1kg that I’m advised dates to the early 1800s, possibly 1700s.
Now attractively worn but very sound, it is still functional and also makes a great decorative piece of French kitchenalia or antique copper collectible…

In very good antique condition with some wear and tarnishing but no damage - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
This has just had a wash, I’m sure it would polish up nicely if so required.
The copper is in good sound, bright, condition with an irregular hammered hand finish.
The surfaces are sound but have some staining, tarnishing, scratches and wear - see photos for condition.
Of cramp seam construction with the dovetail seams visible to the base, down one side and to the lid (cramp seams are the sort of dovetailing of the copper joints) - see photos.
The lid is sound, lined to the underside, and fits reasonably well but needs a little persuasion due to being slightly misshapen - see photos.
The sturdy iron handles have some wear and rust but are sound with no movement at the copper rivet joints.
The interior is reasonably sound with wear and staining - see photos.
NOTE: The tin lining is traditional hand wiped tin and is just about intact but may need re-tinning in the future - see photos.
The base is worn but sound and watertight.
I can find no maker’s mark.

Measures approximately:
29 cm long to the pan edges, 31 cm to the lid,
44 cm long handle to handle,
18.5 cm wide to the pan edges, 22 cm to the lid,
13 cm tall to the pan edge, 20 cm with the lid on,
weighs about 4.1 kg.
