Description
The Lancashire United Company, based in Atherton, was once a well known and respected public transport provider in the county, with vehicles being familiar sights in Manchester, Liverpool, Warrington, Leigh, Bolton, Wigan, Southport, St Helens and other places.
It even participated in the famous X60 route from Manchester to Blackpool in the 1950s and 1960s jointly with Ribble and North Western in the heyday of British seaside holidays before people got a taste for the likes of Benidorm and Crete.
That route is now a shadow of its former self, but this model of a Daimler CVD5, on a route closer to home, to Leigh, is a reminder of the reliable, comfortable and well maintained means of transport enjoyed before the company was absorbed into Greater Manchester Transport: thus bringing to an end local transport identities and recognisable liveries that have morphed into the computer generated and brash colours of the likes of Stagecoach, Arriva and First that are the same wherever you are in the country.
