Description

C19th paper print of an engraving by JC Varrant from a drawing by JMW Turner 1775-1851 measuring 25cm x 16cm. Includes certificate of authenticity signed by the retailer at point of sale some years ago, and since then the print has been kept flat and not framed / displayed so the colours are still good.

The engraving features the bridge(s) and broader landscape of the river at Walton on Thames in Surrey c1830; built-up and busy with traffic these days but you might still be able to pick out the contours of the landscape if you stroll along the towpath at Cowey Sale.....

The name Cowey derives from the words Cow Way - the riverbank was used as grazing for livestock (as shown here by Turner) and approached by a wooden bridge over a small stream known as the Seale or Sale. Sale may derive from the word sallows (willows) which still grow on the riverbank. Local legend also has it that Julius Caesar forded the Thames here on his second invasion of Britain in 54BC.
