Acquired from an Antiquaire in Chatillon sur Seine, Burgundy, this big, heavy, lidded confit pot or salting jar came from a local farm but had latterly been a display piece and planter.
Dating to the early 20th century, it’s a great decorative rustic antique in very good condition for it’s age.
It was probably used as a confit pot for preserving duck in duck fat but they were also used as salting jars to cure or preserve foods in salt.
Still with it’s loose fitting lid which doubles as a bowl when upturned and with both handles intact, it is functional as intended or has a number of modern day uses such as a planter, storage jar, or just a big statement piece of French kitchenalia…
In very good, sound, antique condition with wear and staining consistent with age and use - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
Consists of a large glazed stoneware or earthenware confit pot.
The photos best show the condition of this.
It was in dusty condition when acquired and has just been washed.
Stands well with a low centre of gravity due to it’s substantial weight.
The surfaces are glazed except for the lid which has a matte finish.
They are attractively irregular with bumps and dents - see photos.
No cracks or damage and I have found next to no chips.
There is some wear and a few firing imperfections giving the whole an attractive rustic patina - see photos.
The lid and handles are present and in good sound condition which is unusual for a jug of this age.
NOTE: One of the handles has two ridges which I at first thought were chips but they are over glazed so are just imperfections in the clay before firing - see photos.
The handles are easily strong enough to lift the jar even when filled.
The bottom has wear from use but is sound.
I have filled this with water and it appears to be watertight.
I can find no maker’s mark but both the lid and the pot are marked with the number 8.
Measures approximately:
33 cm tall lid on, 29 cm lid off,
34 cm long handle to handle,
Slightly elliptical in shape but about 29 cm diameter at it’s widest,
24 cm diameter at the top,
25 cm diameter at the base,
weighs about 8 kg.
The wine bottle is to show scale and not included!
