Antique Book, 1885 Sans Famille (1 & 2/Tome Premier & Second), H Malot, E. Dentu

Description

This sale is for the antique books one and two of the French books, Sans Famille which roughly translates as Without a Family and was written by Hector Malot. This edition was published in 1885 by either Librairie De La Société Des Gens De Lettres or E. Dentu in Paris. These are hardcover books with original red cloth with what looks like gold coloured gilt in the indented writing and diagram on the front cover and the flat raised parts of the spine.

Overall, The books are in very good condition considering their age (please see the pictures and description below). There is an inscription on the title page of the first book which looks like it is written in pencil. Unfortunately, I am unable to read what it says though I have included a picture.

This book would make an excellent gift for collectors of classic books and those looking for stories for children.

Sans Famille is an 1878 French novel by Hector Malot. The most recent English translation is Alone in the World by Adrian de Bruyn, 2007. The novel was reportedly inspired by the Italian street musicians of the 19th century, in particular the harpists from Viggiano, Basilicata.

Young Rémi, a foundling, lives on the farm run by his impoverished foster parents. When their money runs out, unbeknown to his foster-mother, Rémi is sold by his hard-hearted foster father to an old street performer named Vitalis. Vitalis was once a famous opera singer, but became destitute after a tragic love affair.
