Good Practice and the Etiquette of Selling

As a seller, you’re in the strong position of having something that someone (hopefully) wants. We're here to help you make the most of our platform. Below, we've compiled a few tips for a stress-free and comfortable buyer-seller relationship.

Etiquette of selling

Before listing on Gumtree, check out our tips to selling etiquette.

Accurate listings with real pictures

Ads with more information and photos attract more interest than those that are a bit thin on details. When you put up a post, you can save yourself a lot of hassle by including a full and accurate description and being totally upfront about any defects or damage. An honest description will make a positive start to building trust. If you can, it’s best to use real photos rather than stock images taken from other websites.

Responding to messages and queries

Little courtesies like answering questions, even if the item is already sold, go a long way to building a good relationship with potential buyers. A speedy reply to messages is another trust-builder and saves buyers a lot of frustration. Even if you think the question is already answered in your description or pictures, a patient response keeps things friendly. And a polite reply to offers you don’t want to accept keeps the door open for the buyer to come back if they change their mind.

Making and keeping appointments

When scheduling a meet up, be considerate about the time of day and the location. When you’re busy, it can be tricky to keep appointments. If you can’t juggle all your commitments, dropping the potential buyer a quick message to rearrange or let them know you’re running late can keep the relationship on track.

When you’ve done the deal

It’s important to keep to the price you’ve agreed with the buyer rather than changing it at the last minute. Consider offers carefully before you accept, so you can be sure you’re happy with the deal and won’t need to change your mind.

Simple good manners as a seller will stand you in good stead in most situations. If you’d like more tips on trouble-free transactions, take a look at our Lifestyle Hub. There’s also more about what’s acceptable, for both seller and buyer, in the Code of Conduct in our Gumtree Policies.
