We all have a few things lying around that we no longer need. But rather than letting these items gather dust, why no make a little extra money by posting an Ad on Gumtree. You can do this quickly and for free via web or mobile.
Posting a Gumtree Ad on web
Before posting an Ad on Gumtree, sign into your account by clicking Login/Register. Don’t yet have an account? Learn how to register for free here.
- Click the Sell button at the top of the Gumtree page.
- Type in the name of what you’re selling so we can suggest a category.
- Select from the categories shown or click Or browse to find a category. If browsing, continue to select from the subcategories until the Continue button appears.
- Enter your post code, then click GO. If you’d rather select from a list of cities, click Select your location instead and choose your city. When you have your location set, click Continue.
- Under the Ad Title section, click into the box and type in a descriptive title.
- Add pictures to your ad by clicking Add Images and selecting the files from your computer.
- Click into the box in the Description section and type in information about your ad. Be as detailed as possible. If you’re not sure what information you should add, think about what you would want to know if you were the buyer.
- Enter the price using numbers only. The pound symbol and punctuation will be added automatically when you post your ad.
- If you have a website that you’d like to include, click the box under Website Link and then enter the URL. There is a small charge to apply the URL to your ad. For more information, read our article on URL features.
- Choose your feature options. Features are ways to promote your ad and get more views. If you don’t want to promote your ad, you can skip this section.
- Choose your contact method. The ad defaults to the email linked to your account, but you can choose phone only by selecting phone and then deselecting email.
- Double check your ad details. When you’re ready, click Post My Ad.
How do I add photos to an Ad on web
- If you’re posting a new ad, tap Post an Ad. If you’re editing an existing ad, tap Edit
on the ad you’d like to update.
- Scroll down to the Images section.
- Click Add Image to choose photos from your file browser or click and drag images directly over top of the Add Image button.
- When the delete
button appears in the corner of the image, it has finished uploading.
Images from ads that have been inactive for 6 months or more will be automatically deleted. Having trouble? Read our I Can’t Add Photos article for help.
I want to delete or edit an Ad photo on web
- From the post or edit Ad screen, scroll down to the Images section.
- Click the delete
button in the corner of each photo to remove it.
- If you’re editing, save your changes by clicking Update My Ad at the bottom of the screen.
Adding video on an Ad on web
Including a video with your Ad could help you stand out and get more replies. Whether you’re giving buyers a video-tour of your vehicle or posting a commercial for your company, this type of content can be a great way to tell buyers more about your Ad in an engaging way.
- Upload your video to YouTube (follow the platform’s upload instructions for more details)
- From the post ad or edit ad page, scroll down to the Media section.
- Add the video’s link into the YouTube Link field. Make sure to include the full URL link, including the https:// information.
- Confirm the changes to your ad at the bottom of the page.
If you want to link to a video on a different platform, include the URL link in the description section of your Ad.
Please note, the video feature is only available via our website. All video content must be family friendly.
How do I draft an ad on web?
- Click on Post an Ad.
- If you have a draft ad, you’ll see a message asking if you want to use it. Click Load saved draft.
- The details saved from the last Ad you were making will be filled in. Continue adding information or editing as needed.
- When you’re happy with your Ad, click Post My Ad. If you’re not ready, you can leave the page and your changes will be saved into the draft.
If you want to delete a Draft Ad
- Click on Post an Ad.
- If you have a draft ad, you’ll see a message asking if you want to use it. Click No thanks to delete the draft. Note, only one draft ad can be saved at a time.
Creating a Gumtree Ad on IOS
- On the Gumtree Home screen, tap the Post button (it looks like a camera) at the bottom of the screen.
- If you have a draft Ad started, you can choose to continue creating it or start a new Ad.
- Add images by selecting the Add a Photo button at the top of the screen. Choose up to 10 photos from your phone’s gallery or take new ones. You can also change the order by clicking and dragging them where you want them. When you’re happy with your photos, tap back to continue creating your Ad.
- Add your title and description by tapping into that section of the screen and typing in information about your Ad. Be as detailed as possible. If you’re not sure what information you should add, think about what you would want to know if you were the buyer.
- To select your category, tap on Category. Some suggestions will appear based on the title of your Ad. If none of the suggestions work for you, scroll down and select a category manually.
- Depending on the category you chose, you may need to add more details. For example, you may be prompted to select the type of seller you are in Property or add more details like make and model in Motors. To enter any of these details, tap into that section and type in the information.
Changing location or contact method on IOS
- To change your location or contact preferences, tap on Location & Contact.
- Choose your contact method by turning the sliders to the right (on) or left (off). If you’ve chosen phone, tap on the Phone section to type in the contact number you want to use.
- To change your location, tap on Location.
- You can either manually enter a street address or postal code or tap on the location menu to select regions from a list. Addresses are shown as a general area, but if you want buyers to know your exact address, tap Show a map on my Ad.
- When you’re finished, tap back.
- Double check all of your contact and location details, then tap Done again.
- If you want to see what your Ad will look like when it’s posted, tap Preview Ad. When you’re happy with it, tap Post Ad.
How can I get my Ad featured?
- You can now choose to feature your Ad (or tap Skip at the top of the page). If your Ad doesn’t need a listing fee and you’ve chosen not to feature it, skip to step 5.
- After you’ve chosen a feature (or if your Ad requires a listing fee), start the payment process by tapping Checkout.
- On the next screen, choose to pay through either PayPal or credit card. If you’re using PayPal, tap Pay with PayPal and follow the prompts. If you’re using a credit card, tap on the card type and select the type of card you’re using. Tap into each of the fields to enter your card number, expiry, and CSC number. When you’re finished, tap Pay Now.
- Tap Done.
Adding photos to an Ad on IOS
- If you’re posting a new Ad, tap Post. If you’re editing an existing Ad, tap Edit
on the Ad you’d like to update.
- Tap Add a Photo.
- You will be given two options: camera and photo library. Camera will let you to take a new photo to use in your Ad. Photo Library will let you to choose photos that you’ve already taken.
- If you’re using the photo library option, select all of the photos you want to upload and then click Done to upload.
Deleting or editing ad photos on IOS
- From the post or edit ad screen, tap on the photo section.
- To rearrange your photos, tap and hold over the photo you want to move. After holding for about 2 seconds, drag it into the order you want.
To edit or delete photos, tap on the photo you want to change. Options to crop or rotate will be shown along the bottom. The delete button (rubbish bin) will appear at the top. - When you’re happy with your changes, click the back arrow to continue editing your Ad.
- Save your changes by tapping Post Ad at the bottom of the screen.
How do I draft an Ad on IOS?
To save a draft:
- Click on Post and begin creating your Ad.
- When you want to stop and save a draft, click Cancel.
- An option will appear asking if you’d like to save it as a draft. Click Save.
- The next time you click on Post, you’ll be able to continue your ad right where you left off.
Using a draft Ad:
- Click on Post.
- If you have a draft Ad, an option will appear asking if you want to use it. Click Continue Draft.
- The details saved from the last Ad you were building will be filled in. Continue adding information or editing as needed.
- When you’re happy with your Ad, click Post Ad. If you’re not ready, you can leave the page and the new details will be saved into the draft.

How do I draft an Ad on Android?

Why isn’t my Ad posting?
All Ads are reviewed for moderation purposes by our Trust and Safety team. We’ll send you an email to let you know when your Ad goes live to the site. You can also check the status of your Ad in the Manage My Ads section.
If you receive a ‘please fill out all required fields’ error or see a section highlighted in red, it means that there is information missing or not formatted correctly. Click into the red section. If it was empty, enter the information. If you already had information in that field, try removing any symbols or specialised punctuation. If it’s a number-specific field (price, kilometres, etc.), make sure you use numbers only.
