Gumtree messages let buyers and sellers communicate directly and securely. Whether you’re sending a message about an item, replying to a potential buyer, or managing old conversations, knowing how to use Gumtree’s messaging system ensures smooth trading and avoids confusion. In this guide, we’ll show you how to send, reply, and delete messages on web, iOS, and Android.
How to send Gumtree messages
- Contact the seller of an item by clicking the Message button found under the Contact Details section of an Ad.
- Type your message into the box. Remember, detailed messages mean less back and forth and more time to enjoy your day.
- Click Send.
Messaging an Ad on IOS
- Open the Ad you’re interested in.
- Tap Message.
- Tap into the Type a message here box and type in your message. You can also select one of the quick-fill message options by tapping on them.
- When you’re finished, tap the send button (it looks like a paper airplane).
You should see your message appear in the section above. That means it’s sent. To see all of your open conversations, tap on the main menu in the top left corner, then select My Messages.
Messaging an Ad on Android
- Open the Ad you’re interested in.
- Tap Message (it looks like a speech bubble).
- Tap into the Write Message box and type in your message.
- When you’re finished, tap the send button (it looks like a paper airplane).
You should see your message appear in the section above. That means it’s sent. To see all of your open conversations, tap on the main menu in the top left corner, then select My Messages
Receiving messages and sending replies
When someone replies, you’ll get their message in two places. The first copy will go into the Messages section of your account. The second copy will be sent to the email address linked to your account.
Replying by email
To respond directly from your email, hit the reply button as you would with any other email. Don’t worry, your email will be masked.
Replying in the messages section
- Log into your account, then click on the user menu
at the top of the page.
- Select Messages.
- Click on the conversation you’d like to reply to.
- Type your message into the box that says ‘Send message to…’
- Click Send Message.
Replying to messages on IOS
When someone replies to you, you’ll get a notification in your email. If you’re using the Gumtree app, you can opt-in for phone notifications as well.

- Tap on the conversation you want to open. You should see the entire history of your messages back and forth. To see more, scroll up.

Deleting conversations
- Log into your account and click on the user menu
- Select Messages.
- Click on the conversation you’d like to remove.
- Select Delete Conversation.
Tip: After deleting a conversation, it won’t be visible in the Messages section. However, if you still have the email copy, you can reply there. After a new email is sent, it will reappear in Messages.
Deleting conversations on IOS
- Tap on Messages.
- Swipe left over the conversation you want to delete.
- Tap Delete.
After removing a conversation, it won’t be visible in your Inbox anymore. However, if you still have the email copy, you can reply there and the conversation history will reappear in your Inbox after a new message is sent.
Deleting conversations on Android
- Tap on the main menu.
- Select My Messages.
- Tap and hold over the message you want to delete until it turns grey and the Delete button (rubbish bin) appears at the top of the screen.
- Select all of the conversations you’d like to remove.
- Tap Delete.
After removing a conversation, it won’t be visible in your Inbox anymore. However, if you still have the email copy, you can reply there and the conversation history will reappear in your Inbox after a new message is sent.
Can’t see your messages?
If you have a reply in Messages but aren’t seeing the email version, you may need to add noreply@gumtree.com and the domain @reply.gumtree.com to your email safe list. This will prevent messages from getting caught by your email’s filters. Remember to check your junk and/or spam folders as well.
