The Gumtree Guide for Students

Calling all students!

Money can be tight for students at the best of times, as we head further into a cost of living crisis every penny counts. Good news is Gumtree can help everything go that little bit further.

In fact, we can pretty much be your one stop shop for all things accommodation, jobs and furnishings. Follow this simple guide on how to make the best use of our platform to meet all your student life needs.

From practical tips to job boards, Gumtree’s student guide gives ideas and inspiration for the academic year ahead.

Flat Share

18 to 24 year olds’ most used category on Gumtree? Property!* University can be where you make friends for life, so why not start at home? Search for flat shares, rooms for rent and even stipulate ‘bills included‘, to find the right base for you. You can search by postcode to find somewhere within walking or cycling distance, or perhaps space is your top priority – like a double room or enough rooms for you and your mates.

You can then set your maximum budget per week using our filter and can even include ‘bills included’ in your search criteria to get a better idea of your financial outgoings.

Local Jobs

Once your home is sorted, you may want to start looking for some local and part time work to earn a little extra cash to make your uni experience go that little further, because boy do those expenses sure start tallying up when living away from home (we’ll never take you for granted again mum and dad!)

At Gumtree we have so many different types of job opportunities advertised every day, but hospitality, delivery and administrative positions tend to be our most popular. When it comes to finding work that suits your student lifestyle, a few key search tips that might help are: filtering by town or postcode to make sure it’s nearby to your campus in case you need to rush to and from lectures, include keywords ‘part time’ or ‘temporary’ to ensure you’ll still have time for socialising and of course studying, and you can even search for roles with ’no experience required’ if you need something simple to pick up just for the extra cash.

Student Guide: Making Your Room A Home

Let’s be real, you’ll never be flush with cash as a student. But that’s where second-hand comes in. Whether it’s your room that needs furnishing (desk, office chair, bed), the living room piece de resistance – a sofa, tech on a budget because your laptop or phone is on the fritz, or even kitchen utensils and mugs for all those cups of coffee, you can find pretty much everything you need on Gumtree.

And what’s better than the bargains you can find on Gumtree? Why, Freebies of course! We have thousands of items listed for free in our fan favourite category. You can often find a sofa, a chest of drawers, even printers or books up for grabs. Our community prefers to give things away, saving them from landfill, and the hassle of having to throw them away… everyone’s a winner.
