Transmission problems in your BMW after a spark plug change are likely caused by incorrect spark plug fitment, where overly long plugs can interfere with transmission components. This issue commonly affects UK BMW models like the 3 Series or 5 Series.

When changing spark plugs on a BMW in the UK:

  1. Lift the bonnet and remove the engine cover
  2. Label and remove ignition leads (note their cylinder positions)
  3. Use a proper spark plug socket to remove old plugs
  4. Check for debris in plug wells and clean thoroughly
  5. Hand-tighten new plugs before final torquing
  6. Reconnect leads in correct firing order

Always use manufacturer-approved spark plugs (like NGK or Bosch) specified for your BMW model to prevent transmission interference. For UK models, common compatible plugs include:

  • BMW 1 Series: NGK SILZKBR8D8S
  • BMW 3 Series: Bosch ZR5TPP330
  • BMW 5 Series: NGK PLZKAR6A-8S

If transmission warning lights persist after proper spark plug replacement, have your BMW diagnosed at an authorised UK service centre as the issue may require ISTA diagnostic equipment.
