The 10th digit in the VIN represents the year. A VIN consists of 17 characters and is also known as a 17-digit code.

Digits 1 to 3 (WMI): Manufacturer, brand, and type;

Digit 2: Automaker code;

Digit 3: Vehicle type code;

Digits 4 to 8 (VDS): Vehicle features;

Digit 9: Check digit;

Digit 10: Model year;

Digit 11: Assembly plant;

Digits 12 to 17: Serial number.

The VIN is a unique set of numbers used on vehicles to identify the manufacturer, engine, chassis number, and other specifications. To avoid confusion with the numbers 1, 0, and 9, the letters I, O, and Q are not used.

From a used car dealer’s perspective, the 10th VIN digit is critical for verifying a vehicle’s age quickly. A 2021 Nissan Leaf might show 'M', while a 2018 Vauxhall Corsa could have 'J'. Skipping confusing letters (I, O, Q) ensures clarity. Always double-check against the logbook to spot inconsistencies, which might hint at clocking or fraud.

The 10th digit in a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) represents the model year. For example, a VIN with 'G' in the 10th position indicates a 2016 model, while 'L' denotes 2020. This standard applies to most vehicles manufactured after 1980. The letters I, O, Q, U, and Z are skipped to avoid confusion with numbers.

To decode the year:

  1. Locate the 10th character in the 17-digit VIN.
  2. Refer to the VIN year chart (e.g., A=1980, B=1981, ..., Y=2000, 1=2001, ..., 9=2009, A=2010, etc.).
  3. Note that some manufacturers may use slightly different codes for pre-1980 models.

For clarity, a Tesla Model 3 with a 10th digit 'P' is a 2023 model, while a Ford Focus with 'K' is 2019. Always cross-check with the manufacturer’s guide if unsure, as rare discrepancies can occur.
