The manual key slot on most BMW models (including the 1 Series, 3 Series and 5 Series) is located either in the steering column or near the start/stop button. To start the car, insert the key into the slot then press the START button.

For BMW key battery replacement:

  1. Press the small switch on the key fob's back to release the mechanical key
  2. Use the mechanical key to gently pry open the key casing by inserting it into the side slot
  3. Remove the old CR2032 battery (note the positive side facing up)
  4. Insert new battery with correct orientation
  5. Reassemble the key and test functionality

Key battery tips:

  • Always use CR2032 lithium batteries (3V) for BMW smart keys
  • Typical battery life is 12-24 months depending on usage frequency
  • Avoid touching the circuit board when changing batteries
  • BMW models like the iX and i4 use different key designs - check your manual
  • Consider professional replacement at a BMW dealership if unsure

For UK BMW owners, remember that extreme temperatures can affect key battery performance. If issues persist after battery replacement, visit an authorised BMW service centre for diagnostics.
