Small particles on your car’s paint surface, such as dirt, tree sap, or industrial fallout, can cause scratches or stains if not removed properly. The best approach is to act quickly but gently to avoid damaging the clear coat.

  1. Rinse the area first with a pressure washer or hose to loosen debris. Avoid rubbing dry particles, as this may scratch the paint.
  2. Use a pH-neutral car shampoo and a microfiber wash mitt to clean the surface. Start from the top and work downward to prevent dragging contaminants.
  3. For stubborn particles like tar or sap, apply a dedicated automotive tar remover or isopropyl alcohol (diluted 1:1 with water) on a microfiber cloth.
  4. After cleaning, inspect for etching or swirl marks. If present, a light polish or clay bar treatment can restore the finish.
  5. Apply wax or ceramic coating to protect the paint from future contamination.

Regular washing (every two weeks) and prompt removal of contaminants help maintain the paintwork. Avoid using household cleaners, as they may strip protective layers.

If there are gritty protrusions on the paintwork of a new car, it's highly likely that there was an issue during the factory production or the paint surface was damaged during transportation. In this case, you should visit the dealership to discuss the matter. If the problem isn't too severe, a simple polishing of the new car may suffice. However, if it's a product quality issue, the seller should propose a solution, which may even involve replacing the vehicle with a new one of the same model. If negotiations fail, we can resort to legal means to protect our rights.

Of course, it could also be due to harmful substances embedded in the surface causing the gritty texture. In this scenario, using a detailing clay bar is recommended for removal. First, rinse the car with clean water or car shampoo to remove loose dirt. Then, gently rub the paintwork with a pre-soaked clay bar while misting the surface with water. Be careful not to apply excessive pressure to avoid scratching the paint with microscopic particles. Continue until the surface regains its smoothness before stopping.

From a detailing professional’s perspective, small particles require a methodical approach. Always use a two-bucket wash system (one for soap, one for rinsing) to prevent cross-contamination. Clay bars are highly effective for embedded contaminants but require lubrication (quick detailer spray). For bird droppings or tree sap, immediate removal is critical—these substances can etch paint within hours if left untreated.
