The rear button in a car is the rear windshield defogger switch. Pressing it removes fog from the rear windshield. The word "rear" literally means the back or rear part. In cars, the rear button is usually located on the air conditioning control panel and serves as the rear windshield defogger switch. However, many car models now omit the "rear" label and simply use a square with an upward wavy line icon instead.

The principle behind the rear windshield defogger involves embedding copper wires in the glass. When moisture or fog forms on the rear windshield, an electric current heats these wires, warming the glass and clearing the fog.

In current car designs, pressing the rear button activates the rear windshield defogger, which automatically turns off after about 10 minutes to protect the heating elements.

Car air conditioning systems often have both Front and Rear buttons. The Front button is for defogging the front windshield, while the Rear button is for defrosting the rear windshield. The working principles for front and rear windows differ: the front window uses airflow for defrosting, whereas the rear window relies on electric heating for dehumidification.

Common functional buttons in a car include:

  1. Fuel Tank Release: Remotely opens the fuel tank cap.
  2. ESP Switch: Turns the vehicle's stability control system on or off.
  3. Parking Sensor Button: Manually controls the parking sensors.
  4. Central Locking Button: Controls the central door lock system.
  5. Headlight Washer Button: Activates the automatic headlight cleaning function.
  6. Rear Sunshade Button: Opens or closes the electric rear sunshade.
  7. Tire Pressure Monitoring: Continuously monitors tire pressure while driving.
