From a mechanic’s perspective: EFB batteries are a step up from standard ones, especially for cars with start-stop systems. They handle frequent engine restarts better due to reinforced plates and acid mixing. If your car has this tech (common in models like the VW Golf), an EFB battery is likely the right choice unless specified otherwise. They’re more durable but less costly than AGM alternatives.

EFB stands for Enhanced Flooded Battery, a type of car battery designed to meet the demands of modern vehicles with start-stop technology. Unlike standard lead-acid batteries, EFB batteries have improved durability and charge acceptance, making them better suited for frequent engine restarts. They are often found in entry-level start-stop systems, offering a balance between performance and cost.

Key features of EFB batteries include:

  1. Enhanced cycle life – They withstand more charge-discharge cycles than conventional batteries.
  2. Better charge recovery – They recharge faster after engine restarts.
  3. Robust construction – Thicker plates and acid circulation systems improve longevity.

EFB batteries are commonly used in vehicles like the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Corsa with basic start-stop systems. For more advanced setups (e.g., hybrids or luxury cars), an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery might be recommended. Always check your vehicle’s manual to ensure compatibility.

An EFB battery refers to an Enhanced Flooded Battery. The details and functions of an Enhanced Flooded Battery are as follows:

Details of an Enhanced Flooded Battery:

In contrast to 'starved electrolyte' batteries, the remaining space in the battery case after accommodating the plates, separators, and other solid assembly components is entirely filled with sulphuric acid electrolyte (which may vary depending on the battery type). The electrolyte is in an abundant, excess state, hence it is termed a 'flooded' battery. Conversely, if the remaining space after accommodating the plates, separators, and other solid assembly components is not completely filled with electrolyte, and the plates are not fully immersed in the electrolyte, it is referred to as a 'starved electrolyte' battery.

Function of an Enhanced Flooded Battery:

The Enhanced Flooded Battery is designed to address the loss caused by the evaporation and decomposition of water during use. To adjust the electrolyte density, the battery is designed with a removable sealing cap, allowing the addition of distilled water to regulate the electrolyte concentration.
