68Causes and solutions for steering wheel noise when turning:
- If the noise comes from within the steering wheel, it is most likely due to the clock spring (airbag coil). Remove the steering wheel airbag clock spring, apply some grease, and check if the noise persists. If it does, the clock spring will need replacing.
- Worn-out tie rod ends can cause steering wheel vibration and noise. This typically requires replacing the tie rod ends followed by a wheel alignment.
- Noise from the suspension strut top bearing can be identified by listening near the strut top mount under the bonnet. Applying grease to the top bearing may help, but if the noise continues, replacement is necessary.
- Friction between plastic components may cause noise, particularly in cold weather when plastics harden. New vehicles may also experience this as steering wheel components settle during the break-in period.
- Steering rack issues. Various problems can cause rack failure, including insufficient lubrication, dislodged rubber boots, or damaged gears. Professional inspection at a garage or dealership is recommended for accurate diagnosis.
