When using the car's air conditioning for cooling, it's advisable to alternate between the recirculation and fresh air modes. Prolonged use of fresh air mode may compromise cooling efficiency, whereas extended recirculation can lead to stale air inside the vehicle, which isn't conducive to health.

When cooling the car, recirculation mode undoubtedly provides more effective temperature reduction than fresh air mode, allowing the interior to cool rapidly. However, this creates a completely sealed environment where outside air cannot enter, potentially causing discomfort due to lack of air circulation.

Conversely, while fresh air mode facilitates ventilation by introducing outside air, it simultaneously allows cooled interior air to escape, resulting in less effective temperature maintenance compared to recirculation.

During summer, using recirculation mode with air conditioning prevents warm external air from entering, enabling quicker cabin cooling for enhanced comfort. In winter, if the interior becomes excessively warm with heating, switching off the fan and activating fresh air mode maintains both air freshness and a pleasant temperature.

Additionally, when encountering traffic congestion, it's recommended to switch to recirculation mode. This prevents the ingress of polluted exterior air containing vehicle emissions, which is particularly prevalent during stationary traffic conditions.

However, fresh air mode is better for longer journeys or when the cabin needs ventilation to prevent stuffiness.

Here’s when to use each mode:

  1. Recirculation mode is best for rapid cooling when you first start driving, as it maximises the air conditioner’s efficiency by cooling existing air rather than constantly battling hot external air.
  2. Switch to fresh air mode after 10-15 minutes to avoid excessive humidity and maintain air quality. Stale air can cause drowsiness, so periodic ventilation is important.
  3. In heavy traffic or polluted areas, recirculation helps keep exhaust fumes out of the cabin.
  4. If the windscreen fogs up, switching to fresh air mode with the A/C on can help clear condensation faster.

Modern cars like the Tesla Model 3 or BMW iX often have automatic climate systems that adjust between modes intelligently. For manual systems, balancing recirculation and fresh air ensures comfort and efficiency.

However, avoid prolonged use to prevent CO2 buildup and maintain oxygen levels.
