54Dogs often gently bite their owner's hands during play, usually as a learned behaviour from puppyhood. Puppies naturally practise hunting behaviours through play, and if owners frequently use their hands during interactions, the dog may develop this habit. Teething between 4-6 months can also cause chewing behaviour. Owners unintentionally reinforce the behaviour by reacting positively or allowing it to continue.
This behaviour stems from natural canine instincts. Puppies explore the world through their mouths and learn bite inhibition during play with littermates. When transferred to human interactions, gentle mouthing can become habitual if not properly managed.
To discourage hand-biting:
- Redirect to appropriate chew toys when the behaviour occurs
- Withdraw attention immediately if biting happens
- Use positive reinforcement when the dog plays without mouthing
- Ensure adequate physical and mental stimulation through walks and puzzle toys
During teething periods, provide suitable chew items to relieve discomfort. Frozen carrots or specially designed teething toys can help. Consistency is key - all family members should follow the same approach to avoid confusing the dog.
If the behaviour persists beyond puppyhood or becomes more intense, consult a veterinary behaviourist. They can assess whether underlying anxiety or other factors contribute to the behaviour and suggest tailored training methods.
