Mother dogs often exhibit protective behaviour after giving birth to keep their puppies safe. The time it takes before she allows you to handle the puppies depends on her trust in you. A well-bonded dog may not mind her owner touching the puppies immediately, but she may still be wary of strangers. If the mother is less trusting, she may resist contact for an extended period. To minimise risks, such as transferring human scent or bacteria to the puppies, wear gloves when handling them. This precaution helps prevent the mother from rejecting the puppies or exposing them to infections. Always approach the mother calmly and observe her reactions before attempting contact. If she shows signs of stress or aggression, give her more time to adjust. Gradually build trust by assisting with feeding or cleaning the nesting area. Consult a veterinary professional if the mother remains excessively protective or rejects the puppies entirely.
