Kittens typically need a scratching post by 3-4 months of age. At this stage, their claws become sharp and destructive, leading them to scratch furniture. Introducing a scratching post early helps redirect this natural behaviour and protects your home.

To train a kitten to use a scratching post, follow these steps:

  1. Discourage furniture scratching by applying deterrents like citrus sprays on their usual targets.
  2. Place multiple scratching posts near furniture, vertical surfaces, and their sleeping area.
  3. Sprinkle catnip on the post if your kitten enjoys it.
  4. Attach dangling toys to the top of a securely fixed vertical post to encourage play and scratching.
  5. Choose a post with appealing materials like pine, cedar, or mahogany. An ideal size is around 15cm x 20cm with a length of 30-40cm.

Regular nail trimming also helps minimise damage from scratching.
