How to tell if your kitten is hungry and what to do

A hungry kitten will often meow persistently, circle around its food bowl, or search for food in the kitchen or near bins. Some clever cats may vocalise directly at their owner or gently nip fingers to prompt feeding. Others use affectionate behaviours like rubbing against legs or circling their owner. Prolonged hunger can lead to low blood sugar or even shock in kittens, so regular, measured meals are essential for digestive health and wellbeing.

Signs your kitten needs feeding include increased vocalisation, food-seeking behaviour, and attention-seeking actions. These signals vary between individuals - some cats become more vocal while others use physical contact.

Kittens require frequent meals due to their fast metabolism. Feed them small portions 3-4 times daily. Always provide fresh water alongside meals. Monitor portion sizes according to age, weight, and the food manufacturer's guidelines.

If your kitten shows signs of weakness, lethargy or disorientation, consult a vet immediately as these may indicate hypoglycemia. Never leave kittens without food for extended periods - their small bodies lack energy reserves.
