41A recently neutered male cat can still impregnate a female for 3-8 weeks after the procedure. This occurs because residual sperm remains in the reproductive tract. To prevent unwanted pregnancies, keep neutered males separated from females in heat for at least two months post-surgery. Many owners mistakenly believe neutering provides immediate infertility, leading to unexpected litters.
Neutering gradually reduces male cat behaviours over weeks. Mounting females may continue initially but typically diminishes within 1-2 months as testosterone levels decrease. Similarly, urine spraying and its strong odour lessen over this period, usually becoming unnoticeable after about a month.
The penile spines (small barbs on the penis) also recede post-neutering. These anatomical features, present in intact toms, gradually disappear as hormone levels drop.
Some neutered males may show continued aggression towards other cats. This behaviour usually improves within several months as hormones stabilise. For persistent cases, veterinary-prescribed medications like mirtazapine or amitriptyline may help, though these require professional consultation.
Most neutered toms fully settle within 2-3 months, transitioning into calmer companion animals. With patience, former breeding males often develop excellent temperaments, making wonderful lifelong pets.
