Cleaning car floor mats depends on their material. For plastic mats, use water with mild detergent and a brush, then rinse. Fabric mats need vacuuming or gentle hand washing with specialist cleaner - never wring or sun-dry them. Leather mats should be wiped with a damp cloth; avoid soaking to prevent cracking. Always air-dry mats away from direct heat.

Plastic mats are simplest to maintain. A mix of washing-up liquid and warm water with a stiff-bristled brush removes ground-in dirt. Rinse thoroughly and hang to dry. Avoid harsh chemicals that may cause fading.

For fabric or carpeted mats, start by vacuuming loose debris. For stains, use a dedicated carpet cleaner in lukewarm water. Submerge for no more than 15 minutes, then gently agitate. Roll the mat to remove excess water before air-drying - twisting can distort fibres.

Leather mats require careful treatment. Wipe spills immediately with a microfiber cloth. For deeper cleaning, use pH-neutral leather wipes or a damp cloth with saddle soap. Apply conditioner quarterly to prevent drying. Never use bleach or abrasive tools that scratch the surface.
