You can receive up to 11 penalty points without immediate consequences. If you accumulate 12 points or more within three years (the period points remain valid), you may face disqualification under the 'totting up' system. The DVLA will notify you if you're at risk of being banned. For serious offences, courts can impose immediate driving bans regardless of existing points. Points stay on your licence for 4-11 years depending on the offence. Note that new drivers face licence revocation if they get 6 points within two years of passing their test.

You can receive up to 11 penalty points on your UK driving licence without immediate consequences. If you reach 12 points or more within three years (known as 'totting up'), your licence will be revoked. You'll need to reapply for a provisional licence and may have to retake your test. For new drivers, accumulating 6 points within two years of passing your test will result in licence revocation. The DVLA handles all penalty point administration - there's no need to visit a local office unless specifically instructed. Points typically stay on your licence for 4-11 years depending on the offence.
