In the UK, a first full driving licence is valid for 10 years. At renewal, it's typically valid for another 10 years. After age 70, licences must be renewed every 3 years, subject to meeting medical requirements. There's no 'permanent' licence - all drivers must renew periodically.

Drivers over 70 can continue driving if they meet medical standards. They must declare they meet the minimum health requirements when renewing. There's no automatic testing, but the DVLA may request a medical examination if health conditions are declared.

After 70, drivers are restricted to vehicles their licence category allows. Most retain their existing categories unless medically restricted. There's no automatic downgrade to just Category B (cars), but drivers may choose to surrender higher categories voluntarily.
