How long does it take to complete the air bleeding after replacing the coolant?

From a mechanic’s perspective, air bleeding duration hinges on the cooling system’s complexity. Modern cars with sealed systems (e.g., BMW iX) often bleed faster—around 10–20 minutes. Older models with manual bleed valves or intricate pipework (like some Land Rovers) can take up to 45 minutes. Always check for leaks afterward, as improper bleeding risks airlocks, leading to overheating.

After replacing the coolant, air bleeding typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the car model and cooling system design. The process involves running the engine to circulate the coolant while systematically releasing trapped air from the system. Some vehicles, like the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Corsa, have self-bleeding systems, making the process quicker. Others, particularly older models, may require manual bleeding via the radiator or expansion tank.

To bleed air properly:

  1. Park the car on a level surface and let the engine cool.
  2. Remove the radiator or expansion tank cap (only when cold).
  3. Start the engine and let it idle, allowing the thermostat to open.
  4. Top up coolant as needed while air bubbles escape.
  5. Squeeze hoses gently to help dislodge trapped air.
  6. Replace the cap once the system is bubble-free and coolant levels stabilise.

If air remains, overheating or erratic temperature gauge readings may occur. In such cases, repeat the process or consult a mechanic.

There is no specific time for the air bleeding after replacing the coolant. Once the vehicle's electric fan starts running and the car is parked to cool down, the air (airlock) will automatically dissipate.

Function of coolant:

The full name of coolant should be antifreeze coolant, meaning it is a coolant with antifreeze function. Coolant prevents the cooling liquid from freezing and cracking the radiator or damaging the engine cylinder block or head during cold winter parking. It is a type of cooling liquid containing special additives, mainly used in liquid-cooled engine cooling systems, offering excellent performance such as antifreeze in winter, anti-boil in summer, and year-round protection against scale and corrosion.

Coolant replacement cycle:

Vehicle coolant generally needs to be replaced every 2 years or 40,000 kilometers. This is just a reference cycle. For commercial vehicles with longer mileage, the replacement cycle is shorter. Since driving conditions vary for each vehicle, the replacement should be based on actual usage. Check the condition of the coolant; if it is found to be insufficient, replenish it promptly. If suspended matter, sediment, or signs of deterioration or discoloration are observed in the coolant, replace it immediately and clean the system.
