You can book an MOT up to three months before its expiry date. For example, if your MOT is due on 9th September, you can have it tested from 1st July onwards. The DVSA allows this early testing window to help motorists avoid last-minute delays. However, your vehicle must be road-legal at the time of testing - this includes clearing all outstanding penalty charge notices (PCNs) and fixed penalty fines. Vehicles with unresolved traffic violations will fail the MOT inspection. The testing centre will issue an advisory notice requiring you to settle fines before retesting. Required documents for MOT include: 1. Vehicle registration certificate (V5C), 2. Current MOT certificate (if applicable), 3. Proof of valid road tax. Note that different vehicle types (cars, vans, motorcycles) have varying MOT schedules - check your registration document for specific dates. Never let your MOT expire as driving without a valid certificate carries a £1,000 fine.
