Driving through flood water can significantly damage your car in the UK. The main risks include reduced braking performance and potential engine damage. When driving through water, your car's brake discs and drums can become wet, reducing friction and stopping power. UK drivers should note that after passing through deep water (typically anything over 10cm), you should drive in low gear for a short distance while gently applying the brakes to dry them out. For popular UK EVs like the Nissan Leaf or Tesla Model 3, water ingress can be particularly dangerous to electrical systems. If you must drive through flood water, proceed slowly (no faster than walking pace) and avoid creating a bow wave. Never attempt to drive through flood water deeper than 10cm (about the height of your wheel rims) as this could lead to catastrophic engine damage in petrol/diesel cars or electrical system failure in EVs. The AA recommends avoiding flood water altogether if possible, as 90% of flood-related vehicle breakdowns occur when drivers ignore depth warnings.
