Spark plugs do work continuously. Once the engine is started, the spark plugs are in operation as long as the engine is running. Spark plugs are a crucial component of the engine's ignition system, with their primary function being to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinders.

The combustion of the air-fuel mixture in the engine relies on the ignition coil generating high-voltage electricity. This high voltage passes through the spark plug's centre electrode, ionising the air gap to produce an electrical spark, thereby igniting the combustible mixture in the combustion chamber. Thus, it's evident that spark plugs play a vitally important role in engine operation.

Spark plugs do not work continuously. They fire intermittently, synchronised with the engine's combustion cycle. In a four-stroke petrol engine, each spark plug fires once every two revolutions of the crankshaft. The ignition system delivers a high-voltage pulse to the spark plug at the precise moment needed to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder.

The firing sequence depends on engine speed. At idle (around 800 RPM), a spark plug might fire 6-7 times per second, while at 6,000 RPM, it fires 50 times per second. Modern engines use coil-on-plug or distributorless ignition systems for precise timing.

Key factors affecting spark plug operation:

  1. Engine load – more frequent firing under acceleration.
  2. Temperature – colder plugs for high-performance engines.
  3. Wear – electrodes degrade over time, reducing efficiency.

For optimal performance, spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000-60,000 miles, depending on the type (copper, platinum, or iridium). Symptoms of worn plugs include misfires, poor fuel economy, and rough idling.
