Reasons and solutions for a car not moving when in D gear with the accelerator pedal having no effect:

  1. Insufficient transmission fluid or low internal hydraulic pressure.

Solution: Top up the transmission fluid promptly.

  1. Rear axle malfunction. If the driveshaft rotates but the car does not move, the issue lies with the rear axle.

Solution: Jack up the rear axle. If the driveshaft does not rotate when turning one rear wheel while the other rear wheel rotates in reverse, it indicates all the driven bevel gear rivets are sheared. If the other rear wheel also does not rotate, inspect the half-shaft for breakage. Severe damage requires immediate replacement.

  1. Transmission fault. If the driveshaft does not rotate when the car starts and the transmission is in a certain gear, the issue is with the transmission. This could be due to incorrect signals from the gear shift valve position sensor, failure to detect the current gear, or faults in the transmission solenoid and electronic module.

Solution: Take the car to a repair shop for transmission servicing.

  1. Clutch malfunction. If the driveshaft does not rotate in any gear, the issue is with the clutch.

Solution: The owner should promptly take the car to a repair shop for clutch inspection.

  1. Broken half-shaft sleeve or dislodged wheel hub bearing lock nut. The car does not move when shifting into gear and starting. First, diagnose the issue by checking both rear wheels. If both rear wheels are dislodged, it may indicate a broken half-shaft sleeve or dislodged wheel hub bearing lock nut.

Solution: Replace and reinstall the half-shaft sleeve or wheel hub bearing lock nut.

  1. The parking system is engaged or hill-start assist is automatically activated.

Solution: Disable the parking system and hill-start assist function.

  1. Gear shift valve malfunction, causing incomplete gear engagement and blocked oil passage.

Solution: Inspect and repair the gear shift valve.

  1. Brake seizure. This prevents the wheels from moving forward, and pressing the accelerator may produce unusual noises.

Solution: Take the car to a repair shop to refurbish the internal brake caliper using sandpaper and grease. If the issue persists, inspect the brake system.

  1. The handbrake is engaged or not fully released.

Solution: The owner should release the handbrake fully.

  1. Incorrect operation. The vehicle may not be started. Some automatic cars move when shifted into D gear and the brake is released, while others require pressing the accelerator. This depends on the type of transmission power coupling device. Continuously variable transmissions use multi-plate clutches, which remain disengaged when in D gear, preventing power transfer and movement.

Solution: Start the vehicle. The clutch gradually engages when the owner presses the accelerator, allowing power transfer and vehicle movement.
