1981 Yamaha SR250 – One-Off Custom Build
This is a unique, fully custom-built 1981 Yamaha SR250, designed and crafted by a time-served mechanical engineer with over 45 years of experience. Built over a 5-year period with well over 1,000 hours invested, this motorcycle features extensive hand-fabricated parts, custom machining, and meticulous attention to detail.
First registered in February 1981, the bike is officially MOT and Road Tax exempt in the UK.
This exact build was accepted into the prestigious Bike Shed Custom Show in London in 2025 (my second build to be selected, following Bike Shed 2022). Due to other commitments, I was unable to exhibit it, but acceptance into this show highlights the caliber and quality of the build.
Engine, Fuel & Exhaust
Engine: Full inspection and complete rebuild including new piston, rings, gaskets, and seals. Engine case fully cleaned, repainted, and side covers powder-coated.
Carburettor & Intake: Brand new Mikuni VM32 carburettor custom-jetted for the SR250, paired with a new DNA air filter, new flange mount, and new silicone fuel lines.
Exhaust: Fully custom handmade stainless steel exhaust system with an upswept aluminium silencer.
Chassis, Suspension & Wheels
Frame & Bodywork: Standard main frame with a custom rear subframe and custom single seat (upholstered by a local specialist). Custom hand-fabricated aluminium side panels and front/rear mudguards. New chain, with front & rear sprockets.
Tank: Modified Honda CG125 fuel tank with the original filler cap removed and re-engineered to accept a new OEM Yamaha filler cap. Finished in stunning Yamaha Brigade Blue paint.
Front Suspension: Marzocchi front forks fitted with new seals, wipers, and fresh oil.
Rear Suspension: New YSS rear shock absorbers with fresh swingarm bearings and seals.
Wheels: Original Yamaha hubs laced to new 18-inch alloy rims (front and rear) using stainless steel spokes with nickel-plated nipples. Fitted with new dual-purpose Kenda tyres.
Controls, Electrical & Finishes
Controls: Renthal handlebars and grips, Domino throttle assembly with brand new cables, and custom-machined stainless steel footpegs.
Electronics & Wiring: Complete custom wiring harness managed by an NWT Cycletronic solid-state control unit. Powered by a lightweight lithium battery.
Lighting & Instrumentation: New headlight, tail light, brake switches, and a combined T&T speedometer/tachometer.
Fasteners & Powder Coating: Frame and brackets are all powder-coated, nickel-plated, or painted. Stainless steel fasteners and custom hand-machined fixings used throughout.
Condition & Location
The bike runs exactly as it should. It has not been ridden on the open road since completion—only taken for a brief test run around the block. It is essentially in virtually brand-new condition throughout.
Selling purely to free up space in the garage for the next project.
