Rare Vintage 1930s/1940s Hand-Embroidered Petrol Blue Silk Satin Dressing Gown
Torquay, Devon
£350
1 / 7
Description
A truly exquisite piece of vintage Asian export textile art. Crafted in heavy, petrol blue silk satin, this 1930/1940s lounge robe features extraordinary full-back needlework rendered entirely by hand in fine silk thread.
Key Features & Needlework Artistry:
The lower back features a breathtakingly detailed hare/rabbit crouching among wild grasses, worked in shaded satin stitch to create realistic depth and fur texture. Mammal motif, especially hares, are exceptionally rare and highly prized among vintage silk collectors. The upper back displays a beautifully coloured songbird perched upon blooming plum branches (Meihua) and towering bamboo stalks. Front & sleeve accents include delicate plum blossom spray embroidery accents the wide T-sleeves and front wrap lapels.
Complete with its original matching silk waist belt featuring intricate hand-knotted macrame fringe ends and tasseled ties.
Overall in GREAT VINTAGE CONDITION, particularly given its age (stored in an attic for over 40 years). The silk body and embroidery remain vibrant, crisp, and strong with gorgeous luster and sheen.
There is one small area of silk shattering/wear located at the back neck point near the inner collar seam (see close-up photo). This is typical for vintage silks of this era due to historical neck contact. It remains stable for wear or display and can be easily reinforced with a lightweight silk backing patch by a conservator if desired.
Free from major staining, underarm discolorations, or dry rot across the main body.
Dry clean only by a vintage textile specialist. Store on a padded garment hanger away from direct sunlight. I have had to put a size in, but it's almost one size fits all as it can be tied at different points.
Cash on collection only, no posting, thank you.
