We got this from a brocante at Reims in the Champagne region and have used it as a wine rack.
It’s actually a heavy 30 bottle Champagne riddling rack, or Pupitre, built from cut down pieces of much larger racks and hinged into a double sided A board rack.
Apparently it originated from a local vigneron who used them at their Champagne House.
A pupitre is used to riddle Champagne bottles. The aim of riddling, or remuage, is to loosen the sediment so that it collects in the bottle neck. This involves rotating the bottle in small increments while tilting it.
Now a little worn but very sturdy in construction and a nice size, it is functional as a wine bottle rack and has a rustic French charm that also makes it a great decorative display piece…

In very good vintage condition with some wear and staining - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
This was quite dirty and has had a light clean and wax.
Constructed from screwed and nailed wood with a hinge and chain to form an A frame.
The riddling rack parts are made from heavy oak which is worn and flaking in places but still very sound.
The fronts are reasonably smooth with a nice faded weathered appearance.
The rear is a little tattier with some splinters but still very sound - see photos.
The edges are trimmed with pieces of hardwood, probably oak, that are a little worn but securely nailed in place.
No sign of woodworm.
The hinge is a little worn but is strong.
The chain is a rusted but sound and secure - see photos.
There is a little movement and rattling the joints but it stands very well.
It is free standing and bottles are posed neck first in the holes, of which there are a total of 30, 15 each side.
The bottom edges are worn but sound - see photos.
I can find no maker’s mark.
