Description

Antique Villeroy & Boch Mettlach Jugendstil Vase, c.1895–1905

An authentic Villeroy & Boch stoneware vase produced at the renowned Mettlach factory in Germany during the height of the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) movement, circa 1895–1905.

This elegant cabinet vase displays the characteristic bulbous lower body with a straight cylindrical neck, a form strongly associated with late 19th-century German Art Nouveau design. It is finished in a sophisticated mottled speckle glaze in warm olive-brown and umber tones, achieved through controlled kiln effects and prized for its organic, naturally variegated appearance.

The base bears the original Villeroy & Boch Mettlach factory mark, confirming period production. The impressed form number further supports its authenticity as a factory-designed model rather than later studio ware.

Dimensions:
Height: 16.5 cm
Width: 14 cm

Condition:
In excellent antique condition. No cracks, no restoration, and no structural damage. Minor surface wear consistent with age only. The glaze is well preserved and evenly developed, with no dulling or later overpainting.

Historical context:
Villeroy & Boch’s Mettlach works were among the most important European producers of high-quality artistic stoneware at the turn of the 20th century. Their Jugendstil designs reflect the movement’s emphasis on natural forms, restrained ornament, and harmony between shape and surface. Such vases were intended as decorative objects for refined interiors rather than utilitarian ware, and today remain highly collectible examples of German Art Nouveau ceramic design.

This piece represents a fine surviving example of Villeroy & Boch’s decorative output from the period and would sit comfortably alongside contemporary works by firms such as Rozenburg, Zsolnay, and Royal Copenhagen in an Art Nouveau or Jugendstil collection.

A refined and authentic Art Nouveau vase from one of Europe’s great ceramic houses.
