About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Mini-Bus Driver/Attendant to join the Kirklees Council Passenger Travel Service, which provides safe and reliable transport for over 1,000 pre-16 children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to schools within Kirklees and beyond.

This role is about more than just getting passengers from A to B — we want to make every journey safe, comfortable, and enjoyable. You’ll be a key part of a team making a real difference in the lives of our passengers and their families.

Key Responsibilities

* Safely drive council minibuses in line with the Code of Practice and road safety regulations.

* Ensure safe boarding, seating, and disembarking of passengers, including the correct securing of wheelchairs and seatbelts.

* Provide assistance to passengers where required, including safe transfers to and from the vehicle.

* Carry out manual handling tasks, including fitting/removing passenger seats and securing wheelchair clamps.

* Maintain a calm, patient, and professional manner when supporting passengers, some of whom may display challenging behaviours.

* Ensure vehicles are kept clean and in a safe, roadworthy condition, reporting any maintenance issues promptly.

Requirements

* Full UK Driving Licence with D1 entitlement (no more than 6 penalty points).

* Minimum 2 years’ driving experience.

* Flexibility to work outside standard home-to-school transport times when required.

* Ability to carry out manual handling duties.

* Enhanced DBS Check with both Adult and Children’s Barred List clearance (Council will arrange if not current).

* Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, working with children and young people with SEND.

Hours & Working Pattern

* Split shifts, typically 7:00–9:30am and 2:30–5:00pm.

* Hours may vary depending on assigned route.

Why Join Us?

* Opportunity to make a real difference in the community.

* Supportive team environment within the local authority.

* Interviews will be held in late August for a September start.

* Full training provided, including passenger safety and disability awareness.

* Competitive hourly rate of £12.85.
