Description
The role A well-regarded specialist school for pupils with autism in North London is looking for an SEN Class Teacher to take a primary class on a long-term basis, with a genuine view to permanent for the right person.
You'll lead a small class of pupils, all with an EHCP, supported by a team of teaching assistants who know the children well. Class sizes are small, the staffing ratios are high, and the school gives its teachers the time and training to do the job properly.
The setting has an experienced leadership team, an on-site therapy team you'll work alongside daily, and a strong culture of low-arousal, relational practice. They are looking for someone who wants to build something with them, not just fill a term.
ECTs with SEND experience are welcome to apply.
What you'll be doing
Planning and delivering a personalised curriculum matched to each pupil's EHCP outcomes and stage of development
Using autism-specific approaches day to day — structured teaching, visual supports, workstations, PECS, Makaton and AAC
Embedding communication, regulation, independence and life skills across the whole school day
Tracking progress on [Evidence for Learning / B Squared], writing reports and leading Annual Reviews
Leading and deploying your class team, and modelling the strategies that work for each child
Contributing to Positive Behaviour Support plans and taking a calm, low-arousal approach to behaviour
Working closely with SaLT, OT and the wider therapy team, and building open relationships with familiesWhat we're looking for
Qualified Teacher Status — essential
Experience of teaching pupils with SEND, in a special school, resource base or mainstream primary
Sound understanding of autism, the SEND Code of Practice and the EHCP process
Confidence planning for pupils working significantly below age-related expectations
Calm, patient and resilient, with high expectations and real flexibility in how you get there
Willingness to train in the school's physical intervention framework [Team Teach / PROACT-SCIPr] and to support personal care needs
Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for a new one
Two references covering the last two years of employmentWhat's on offer
Long-term role with a clear route to permanent on Outer London MPS/UPS plus SEN allowance
Small classes, high ratios and an established, supportive class team
Excellent autism-specific CPD training.
