Night Childcare Officer - SEN School (SEMH)

Location: Chelmsford, Essex

Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience)

Hours: Night shifts (e.g. 10pm - 7am, subject to rota)

Job Type: Full-time / Permanent (flexible options may be available)

About the Role

We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Night Childcare Officer to join a supportive SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Chelmsford. This role is key in providing a safe, structured, and caring environment for young people outside of school hours.

You will support students during the night, ensuring their welfare, safety, and emotional wellbeing while promoting independence and positive routines.

Key Responsibilities

· Provide overnight supervision and care for children and young people with SEMH needs

· Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students throughout the night

· Support with bedtime routines and respond to any night-time needs or incidents

· Monitor and record any concerns, incidents, or changes in behaviour

· Work in line with safeguarding policies and procedures at all times

· Provide reassurance and emotional support where required

· Maintain a calm, structured, and safe environment

· Communicate effectively with daytime staff to ensure continuity of care

Requirements

· Previous experience working with children or young people, ideally within an SEN, SEMH, or residential care setting

· A calm, patient, and resilient approach

· Ability to work independently and remain alert throughout night shifts

· Strong communication and observation skills

· A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people

· Relevant qualifications in childcare, health & social care, or similar are desirable but not essential
