The Yamaha DX21 is a digital controlled bi-timbral programmable digital FM synthesizer with a four operator synth voice generator, released in 1985 by Yamaha.
It uses sine wave-based frequency modulation (FM) synthesis and features two FM tone generators, 32 user voices in RAM, and 128 factory preset sounds in ROM.
The instrument has 61 full-sized keys, which are not velocity-sensitive, and provides eight-note polyphony in single mode.
It can operate in split mode (up to four notes on each side of a programmable split) or dual mode (four-note polyphony with two different programs layered).
The DX21 is MIDI compatible with MIDI In, Out, and Thru jacks, allowing it to be controlled by external devices or to control other MIDI instruments.
It includes a built-in chorus effect and has a 32-voice random-access memory (RAM) for user voices, with the ability to save data to cassette tape.
The DX21 weighs 8 kg (17.6 lbs)
It features a unique memory system with 32 green pushswitches for selecting voices and performances, and it includes a function mode for setting parameters like MIDI channels, pitch bend, and modulation depth.
The DX21 has been used by artists such as Hardfloor, Level 42, Brother Beyond, Astral Projection, Technotronic, Vangelis, and Fatboy Slim.
