Description

"The Subaru Outback 3.0 (often 3.0R or H6) is a highly durable, 3.0-liter flat-six petrol estate (approx. 243-245 hp) produced largely between 2003–2009. Known for reliability, it offers a 0-60 mph time of 8.2 seconds, a top speed of 139 mph and features symmetric all-wheel drive, self-levelling suspension, and sometimes complex, unique interior features like two-piece sun roofs, making it a capable, smooth, comfortable and powerful alternative to four-cylinder models. The 3.0-liter flat-six engine is generally more robust than 2.5-liter alternatives and is capable of covering high mileage (300,000+ miles). Often considered a fast, capable, long-lasting estate, particularly in the 2005-2009 generation."
- synopsis of stats and reviews by Google

If you're looking at this, you already know this is the Victorianox MacGyver of cars. Excellent build quality and does everything.

Full service, long MOT, ULEZ compliant.

245hp of power from the 3.0 litre naturally aspirated flat six boxer engine channeled through 5 speed automatic with manual override, a superb four wheel drive system and all terrain winter-rated tyres means it's quite possibly the quickest most reliable land-based option to cross from one side of Scotland to another, mid-winter, then up some icy/muddy forest track, past the tree line and through deep snow beyond.

I bought it in early 2023 for work - river restoration - as I need something 100% reliable to get me to site and back, often very remote, regardless of weather, plus humming between Edinburgh and Glasgow. It's quite an old car, but utterly reliable as I look after it like my life depends on it (it literally does, I simply can't afford to get stranded in some of the places I go) so I change whatever I need to, as soon as I need to, and it's never once let me down.

MOT to mid Nov 2026, had full service at the last one, plus new front break calipers and disks, suspension components and axle seals. I've also recently refurbished the rims, replaced the fan belt and tensioners, central exhaust section, rear brake disks pads and calipers, and other than touching up cosmetics, there's really nothing needed. Totally solid underside, always rinsed thoroughly after any long salty drives. Not a drop of top up oil or water needed between services. Chain driven valves instead of timing belt - means that's one less thing you have to think about in terms of routine maintenance and a clear indication of how heavy duty these engines are.

Remote central locking with both keys, original Subaru key fob, owners manual, V5C in my name and loads of service history.

Heated leather seats, heated mirrors, AC/climate control, cruise control, traction control, ABS, sat nav, sun roof, airbags, fog lights, immobiliser, cargo tray and anchor points, full size spare tyre etc. All the original top spec options available at the time and not modified or mucked about with like most old Subarus you'll find out there. This, and that it was the larger naturally aspirated H6 engine, and not one of the smaller four cylinder turbos, was of key importance to me when I bought it- needed a Subaru but I didn't want some burnt out boy racer.

Tow ball with working electrics means you can carry a four bike rack, or tow a large trailer. It has the muscle and traction to pull my 25 foot sailing boat up a steep and slippery ramp.

Tinted windows, custom exhaust and recently refurbished black alloys makes you look like a mid-ranking drug dealer (my teenage kids approve), but otherwise it's pretty civilised. Blacked out windows allows you to sleep in the back with the seats down (>6 ft), seat five people comfortably and being a family-friendly estate, rock solid on the highway and easy to park in town (i.e. not a tank).

Bodywork and inside shows it's age but it's not bad, and the few agree related blemishes don't bother me. I'll leave it to the next owner to spruce it up if they want to. 12v socket in dash is loose but works. Leather seats in fair condition, not cracked or excessively worn. Plastic above the boot door got cracked (now neatly taped over) after someone reversed into my bike rack. Wouldn't take much to get it back to show room condition. Peeling window tints that I did myself (badly) simply to be able to occasionally camp in the back on overnight trips, but could definitely be done better. Driver window switch can be a bit fiddly and the offside rear door handle has been disconnected. Again, easy fixes.

It's for sale as I've recently bought a small camper for the extended amount of time I'm going to be staying on site this summer, and I simply can't justify keeping both vehicles. Until it sells it will remain my first choice for any remote/snowy sites, and it terms of cars, the love of my life. Will be very sad to see it go.

Looking for £3,650, which is considerably less than what I'd be happy to pay for it, especially knowing it's service history and accounting for age and condition. Not interested in offers. If it's still listed on here, it's available.

Any test drives will require a photo of you, your photo card driving licence and temporary comprehensive cover - and I'll come with you just in case you're tempted to go for a joy ride.

I can help with local (Edinburgh) pick ups and delivery, after full payment cleared in my account, and if you drop me back at home afterwards/pay for a taxi.
