Description
Rare and amazing sounding speakers from Goodman's high end Achromat range from the late 1970s. They have been re-wired, re-capped, the cabinets have been re-finished and fitted with new foam grilles.
The Achromat range was Goodman's entry into the high end speaker market in the mid to late 1970s. Build quality is superb with heftily built cabinets, cast alloy mid/bass drivers and all air-cored inductors in the crossover.
These have had quite a bit of time and money spent to them to bring them back: The cabinets had holes in the back which have been filled, the tops were scratched and discoloured so have been filled, sanded, rubbed down with wire wool and oiled. The original foam grilles on these have all disintegrated, so I have fitted new open cell foam. The electrolytic capacitors in the crossover were all past their best so have been upgraded to polypropylene film types with correcting ESR resistance. The wiring has also been upgraded and soldered point to point.
They now sound incredible: fantastic transparency, depth and control. They are a 4 ohm load and pretty inefficient so need an amp that can deliver plenty of current to do their best work.
There is a still a bit of age and patina to the cabinets but they look nice now.
I am happy to demonstrate and I have a wide range of used and refurbished hifi equipment for sale. Click on my profile to see my other ads.
