JPW Sonata Bookshelf Speakers. Classic giant killers! Upgraded Crossover.
Brighton, East Sussex
£70
Description
Good examples of one of the great giant killing speakers of the 90s. The crossovers have been upgraded with film capacitors.
This model was introduced at the end of the 80s a was a reviewers favourite. In a 1991 group test of 16 bookshelf speakers What Hifi? magazine said about the £115 Sonatas: "This is the one. The JPW is the best of the budget loudspeakers, and by such an overwhelming margin that there’s effectively no contest. " The review is easy to find online.
Key to its success was the quality of the cabinet which is real wood veneered inside and out for stiffness and very well made. This was achieved for the price by using British prison labour. Later versions used a bog standard vinyl wrapped chip board cabinet which wasn't nearly as good.
This pair are in very condition and the sound is spot on; sweet and natural and unforced. The new film capacitors give a much crisper, more detailed and are a really worthwhile upgrade.
One speaker has a number of small dents on top. The cabinets have been touched up .
