Description

Rover P5B 1971 (Minor Tidy Required) - Walk Around Video

Please watch video walk around for detailed description of this lovely old Rover

This is a very honest and rather lovely looking Rover P5B from 1971

We have taken her in as a part exchange vehicle and have decided to offer her 'as is', meaning we will pass her on at a price point that reflects that some cosmetic tidying (mainly of the interior/engine bay) is required and probably some further fettle beyond the basic tune up our mechanic have already given her.

She has been treated to a fresh set of NGK plugs, the ignition cleaned and set up properly. The carb has had a simple spray cleaner session to ease up operation. She starts up well, she drives well and having looked at the past MOT history, she appears to have been well maintained and she is as solid as the previous MOT tests suggest. The mileage appears very low for her age and we can't be sure if that means she has been around he clock already.

So in summary, she presents very nicely in her Admiralty Blue coachwork with Buckskin leather seating/interior (the paintwork is very nice and can be left exactly as she is), the interior is tired and deserves the hours it takes to bring it back to life. The seating is generally acceptable, with a seem tear in the drivers seat. The re-dye process would be quite effective in this car and a trip to 'Woolies' website will show you the options to use there matching service to buy leather seat stain and finish. The car is new however and obviously very smart, the dash is lovely. The headliner is fully acceptable as is too. The engine bay would allow benefit from a tidy up in regards to cleaning and maybe painting the areas that give the engine bay a lift (air box, steel etc).

The engine sounds sweet and pull wells without effort, no excessive smoke etc, the gearbox is smooth as is the power steering. The brakes and suspension all seems fine too. She absolutely could be enjoyed just how she is. However due to just how grand she look due to her great bodywork and lovely chrome....she deserves the effort to take her to the next level.

She is priced as a car with 'improvements required' and as such we won't offer the usual detailed preparation and PDI etc that we do with our 'retail standard' cars, she is offered as a project...but she is certainly an easy one! - we are asking £9995 and with further work she would easily compete with the cars costing at least 50% more (a good P5B ranges from £15-25k...with some exceptional examples at £30k plus!.

We can arrange full UK transport for a sensible price (we require your postcode for a quote), we can take in either your classic/modern/light commercial vehicle as part exchange.

We are based in the Hampshire countryside near Basingstoke (RG25)

From the internet:
The final iteration of the P5 appeared in September 1967, Now powered by the 3,528 cc (215 cu in) Rover V8 engine also used in the 3500, the car was badged as the "3.5 Litre", and commonly known as the 3½ Litre. The final letter in the "P5B" model name came from Buick, the engine's originator. Rover did not have the budget to develop a new engine; hence, they chose to develop the lightweight aluminium Buick engine, making it considerably stronger. While this added some weight, it still maintained the engine's light and compact features. The Borg Warner Type-35 automatic transmission, hydrosteer variable ratio power steering and front Lucas fog lights were now standard.

Output of 160 metric horsepower (120 kW) was claimed along with improved torque. When introduced in 1967, the Buick-designed V8 produced 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp) at 5,200 rpm and 210 lbâ‹…ft (280 Nâ‹…m) of torque at 2,600 rpm. The greater power of the engine, along with its lower weight, provided improved performance as well as fuel economy.

The exterior was mostly unchanged, apart from bold "3.5 Litre" badging, a pair of fog lights which were added below the headlights, creating a striking four-light array, and the fitting of chrome Rostyle wheels with black painted inserts. The P5B existed as both the 4-door coupé and saloon body style until end of production. Production ended in 1973, by when 9,099 coupés and 11,501 saloons had been built.[4]

The 3½ Litre saloon variant was a favourite of high-ranking government ministers, and served as Prime Ministerial transport for Harold Wilson, Edward Heath, James Callaghan, and Margaret Thatcher. As testament to their suitability, the last batch of P5Bs to roll off the Rover line in June 1973 was purchased by the British government and placed in storage, to be released for government use as required. For that reason, registered relatively new-looking P5s were therefore still familiar sights in Westminster for more than a decade after production had ended.
