1929 Rolls Royce Phantom II - with Huntingdon Limousine coachwork by Brewster

Registration Number: BF 6265
Chassis Number: 35 XJ
Recorded Mileage: TBA

- From The Brian Ford Collection
- In current ownership since 1993
- Recent engine rebuild prior to sale

Brewster & Co. coachworks are credited with delivering some of the most elegant, sporting and attractively proportioned bodies fitted Rolls-Royce chassis in period. Rolls-Royce bought Brewster in 1925, thereby making Brewster its primary supplier of coachwork in America. It is thought that over 400 Springfield-built Rolls-Royces were Brewster-bodied. The Springfield Phantom I was phased out in 1931 in favour of the Derby-built, left-hand drive Phantom II.

The Phantom II featured an improved chassis with hydraulic shock absorbers and semi-elliptic leaf springs. The engine was redeveloped with an improved cylinder head, now mounted in unit with the gearbox. Now sitting lower, sleeker and more modern body designs were able to be applied.

This very attractive early Phantom II was first supplied to Hampshire in 1929 with Park Ward coachwork, acquiring its Brewster Huntingdon body (commission #7310 and originally fitted to Springfield Phantom II chassis 271 AJS) later in life. The handsome 7-passenger Huntington Limousine style is characterised by its slightly raked windscreen, set-back body, and 'six-light' window configuration, lending it a sophisticated yet sporting look.

Acquired by Mr. Ford in 1993 from local specialist Marks Danes, the Phantom has been maintained over the years as required, with attention to the engine, paintwork and trim between 2013 and 2014. More recently the Phantom has been sent to local vintage engineering specialist Bradley Mauger in Sparkford for an engine rebuild. Receipts for this work (c.£10,500) are included in the accompanying history file, in addition to older invoices dating back to 1990, various correspondence and copies of chassis build sheets.

Nicely finished in two-tone grey with blue trim (leather to the front, cloth to the rear), this Phantom II provides stylish vintage motoring at an eminently sensible estimate.
